OTR Basic Knowledge

1, What is an OTR tire?

The letters “OTR” stands for “OFF THE ROAD”. The OTR tires are specially designed for equipment and vehicles used in mining, quarrying, construction, industrial and port handling, etc. Hence, the tires shall be well adapted to deliver good traction on uneven, muddy, or icy road surfaces, to bear a heavy load, and to provide good resistance to wear and heat building.

2, Types of OTR tires

OTR tires can be divided into different ways:

By tire construction type, they can be divided into Radial OTR tires and Bias OTR tires;

By the difference in rim diameter, they can be divided into the Small and Medium Sizes (35’’ and smaller) and Giant Sizes (35’’ and bigger)

By applications, they can be divided into Material Handling and Earthmoving;

4, Size Reading

We are explaining this part with examples as below:

16.00R24

“24” indicates that the nominal rim diameter is 25 inches

“R” indicates that the tire is in radial construction

“16” indicates that the nominal section width is 14 inches

23.5-25

“25” indicates that the nominal rim diameter is 25 inches

“-” indicates that the tire is in bias construction

“23.5” indicates that the nominal section width is 23.5 inches

35/65R33

“33” indicates that the nominal rim diameter is 33 inches

“R” indicates that the tire is in radial construction

“65” indicates that the tire H/S ASPECT RATIO is 0.65

“35” indicates that the nominal section width is 35 inches

Note:

The H/S ASPECT RATIO is the figure of Section Height divided by Section Width. And by the difference of this figure, tires can be divided into:

•Narrow base tires: when the H/S aspect ratio is approximately equal to 1.00 or 0.95. ( e.g. 18.00R33, 24.00R35, 27.00R49)

•Wide base tires: when the H/S aspect ratio is approximately equal to 0.80. (e.g.  23.5R25, 26.5R25, 29.5R25)

•Low profile tires: when the H/S aspect ratio is approximately equal to 0.65,0.70 and 0.75. (e.g. 35/65R33, 26.5R25, 29.5R25)
