Radial Bias Tires Are Superior to Bias Tires

Tires are divided into radial and bias tires in terms of structure. They have different structures: bias tires are pneumatic tires arranged by cord plies and the cords of each adjacent layer of buffer layers which intersect and have a certain angle with the tire center line (usually 48 degrees to 55 degrees); multiple plies of rubberized cords are attached, and adjacent plies of cords are intersected and arranged. The more plies, the greater the strength, the lower the elasticity. A radial bias tire is a tire in which the carcass cords are arranged in the radial direction, and the cushion layer (belt ply) arranged in the circumferential direction or close to the circumferential direction is tightly bound on the carcass.

Due to the different structures of radial and bias tires, radial bias tires have better performance than bias tires.

1. Long service life of radial bias tires

Radial bias tires have high rigidity and small circumferential deformation. Hard rubber can be used as the tread material, so the tire has good wear resistance. In addition, the tire has a large ground contact area, low pressure from the ground, uniform load distribution, and small sliding movement on the road, making the mileage of the tire about 50% longer than that of the bias tire. The comprehensive service life of radial bias tires is 50% to 100% higher than that of ordinary tires. It can be used in general road surface for 100,000 kilometers, in good road surface for 140,000 kilometers, and in bad road surface for about 70,000 kilometers.

2. Radial bias tires have low rolling resistance and can save fuel

Due to the small number of plies of radial bias tire cords and low friction between plies, its rolling resistance is 25% to 30% lower than that of bias tires, which not only improves the dynamic performance of the car, but also improves the fuel economy. In actual use, the fuel-saving rate can reach 6% to 8%, and with the increase of vehicle speed, the fuel-saving effect is better.

3. The radial bias tire has better abrasion resistance

The circumferentially arranged belt plies of radial bias tires strengthen the crown and prevent the tire from being stretched in the circumferential direction, which greatly reduces the sliding friction between the tread and the road surface during the rolling process of the tire, and significantly improves the wear resistance and resistance to mechanical damage of the tread. Compared with ordinary tires, its wear resistance is improved by 30% to 70%.

4. The adhesion performance of radial bias tires is good

The carcass of radial bias tires is soft, the amount of sinking is large, the contact area between the tread and the road surface is large, and the contact pressure is evenly distributed. At the same time, the tire crown is rigid, and the tread circumferential slip is small. Therefore, the tread has good grip on the road surface, which is 10% to 50% higher than that of ordinary tires. At the same time, it has advantages of good traction performance and off-road performance, safe driving, and good climbing performance.

5. Radial bias tires have good shock absorption performance

Radial bias tires are softer than bias tires, have good elasticity, and have good cushioning properties, which can improve the driving stability and riding comfort of the car, and extend the service life of the car parts. The carcass cords of radial bias tires are arranged in a meridian arrangement, which is consistent with the tire deformation direction. It can effectively utilize the strength of the cords, so the number of plies and the amount of rubber can be reduced. Compared with common structure tires, the number of plies is reduced by 40% to 50%, the amount of rubber can be reduced by 20%, and the weight of the tire can be reduced by 5% to 8%. The carcass is thin, soft, stable, and comfortable to ride and can reduce mechanical wear and maintenance costs.

6. Radial bias tires have low tire temperature and fast heat dissipation

Since the number of plies of radial bias tires is small and there is no shearing effect between the plies, radial bias tires have lower friction, faster heat dissipation, and lower temperature rise than bias tires, which is beneficial to the increase of vehicle speed. The radial arrangement of carcass cords eliminates the shearing movement between the plies of the common structure tires. Therefore, energy consumption is low and heat generation is low. In addition, because the carcass cord has a small number of plies, the sidewalls are thin, which facilitates heat dissipation. Therefore, the driving temperature is 30% to 70% lower than that of ordinary tires.

7. The tread of radial bias tire is not easy to puncture and a flat tire is unlikely

The stabilizing layer of radial bias tires is very strong, so that the situation such as tire being pierced by nails, etc., can be roughly reduced by half. Because the cord strength can be fully utilized, the tire is not prone to blasting under harsh conditions.

The weakness of radial bias tires is that cracks are easily generated in the transition area between the tread and the sidewall and near the bead, which requires high materials and manufacturing technology. And the manufacturing cost is relatively high. However, because radial bias tires are obviously superior to ordinary bias tires, their applications are becoming more and more common.
